College for Kids

Grant Wood AEA's College for Kids is a summer program offering advanced level academic and fine arts courses in the college setting to talented and gifted students who have completed 6th, 7th or 8th grade.

Kids on the Block

The "Kids" are a group of near-life-sized puppets that perform for third-graders in the area. The puppets help students with and without disabilities understand and appreciate each other. Scheduling of school performances is done at the beginning of each school year.

Open Minds, Open Doors Conference

Open Minds, Open Doors is a half-day conference intended to encourage middle school girls (7th-8th grades) to pursue career fields with foundations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  Girls attend hands-on workshops, voluntarily conducted by professional working women introducing them to a variety of careers in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City corridor. 

Open Minds, Open Doors is a partnership between Grant Wood AEA, Workplace Learning Connection, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and Coe College

The 2012 conference date is set for Tuesday, Oct.16, 2012.  Registration information will be sent to area schools in
September 2012.

U.S. Senate Youth Exam

Each fall, one student per high school in Area 10 is nominated to take the exam on their knowledge of the United States Government. The exam is given at Grant Wood AEA. Winners are named at the state level and earn a trip to Washington, D.C.
